5 Feb 98 - The image at left shows sea surface height relative to normal on 5-Feb-98. In February, the warm pool - shown as white and red - remained very large in area and volume; but the pool had thinned along the equator and near the coast of South America. This meant that the warm water was not as deep as it was a few months earlier.
